The Sixth Round of CARICOM-Canada Negotiations

The sixth round of negotiations for CARICOM-Canada Trade and Investment Agreement was held at Knutsford Court in Kingston, Jamaica from the 3rd of March to the 8th of March, 2014. Director General of the Office of Trade Negotiations (OTN), Ms. Gail Mathurin, welcomed the delegation and explained that the sixth round of negotiation would be done in a two-part series with the second half reconvening at the beginning of April in Ottawa.

The sixth round of negotiations covered topics of Trade-Related Agricultural Cooperation, Trade in Services and Investment, Financial Services, Investment, Intellectual Property and Innovation, Institutional Issues and Dispute Settlement and Environment.

For both Parties round six of the negotiation presents investment opportunities. The private sector can keenly note that areas of interest for Canadian investors are in construction, energy, forestry, mining, gas, tourism, manufacturing, and environment and in the areas of the service sector interest lies in tourism, environment, computer and professional related services and construction. The top areas for CARICOM are in manufacture of food products, manufacture of textiles, aquaculture, renewable energy, electric power generation, transmission and distribution, manufacture of fertilizers and nitrogen compounds, printing and reproduction of recorded media, manufacture of machinery and equipment, manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products, collection of hazardous waste, computer programming, sound recording and music publishing activities, and scientific research and development.

It is imperative that both sides be able to identify each other’s sensitivities, continue the national consultative processes and conclude this agreement in a timely and successful manner by June 2014.

Enhancing the Caribbean’s Foreign Direct Investment Strategy

Caribbean Export Development Agency (Caribbean Export), in collaboration with the Caribbean Association of Investment Promotion agencies (CAIPA), hosted their 4th Annual CAIPA General Assembly at the Radisson Fort George Hotel & Marina, Belize on November 21-22, 2013.


Under the theme ‘Towards an Enhanced FDI Strategy: Strengthening our Foundation and Honouring Regional Excellence’ Investment Promotion Agency (IPA)officials from Member countries that include: Antigua   and   Barbuda,   Bahamas,   Barbados,   Belize, the Cayman Islands, Curacao, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago and the Turks & Caicos Islands, focused attention on the development of  CAIPA’s Strategic and Sustainability Plan (2014-2018). The Plan is being developed with the assistance if Ideas to Business Limited.

The 5th Management Consulting Symposium


The Caribbean Export Development Agency (Caribbean Export), in collaboration with, Trinidad & Tobago Coalition of Service Industries (TTCSI) and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH commenced the 5th Management Consulting Symposium at the Hyatt Regency, Trinidad on September 10, 2013.  The meeting of over 75 CARIFORUM Management consultants and consulting firms from Europe, South America and Africa will conclude on September 12th 2013. CARILED hosts Local Government Training


Castries, Saint Lucia:  The Caribbean Local Economic Development Project (CARILED) officially opened its third training workshop on Local Economic Development (LED) in the Caribbean.  The one week workshop, held from May 20 – 24, 2013, will train National CARILED Coordinators, Local Economic Development Officers and selected local government officials from 7 demonstration countries that will host projects on local economic development.
