The Belize Trade and Investment Development Service (BELTRAIDE) in collaboration with infoDev, a World Bank Group, hosted a one day workshop with stakeholders to chart a way to foster an innovative entrepreneurship ecosystem in Belize.

This workshop, which was held at the ITVET Dining room in Belize City on Monday February 29th, brought together incubator managers, entrepreneurs, academics, government officials, the media, donors and investors to facilitate the development of a collaborative approach to building a sustainable ecosystem for entrepreneurship and innovation.

The workshop, entitled ‘Accelerate Caribbean’s Entrepreneurship Ecosystem Development’, is part of the Accelerate Caribbean Project, which forms part of a seven-year, $20M Entrepreneurship Program of Innovation in the Caribbean, (EPIC). The objective of this project is to strengthen entrepreneurship and boost job creation across 14 CARICOM countries, including Belize. The project is designed by InfoDev and implemented by IMC Worldwide.

The Entrepreneurship Ecosystem Development Workshop will be followed by a three-day Accelerate Caribbean’s Business Incubation Management (BIM) Training from Tuesday, March 1st to Thursday, March 3rd, 2016 (ongoing), this is being held at BTEC training room.

BIM is designed for business incubation managers and other stakeholders wishing to increase their understanding and know-how of the business incubation process. Topics such as “planning and managing and incubator”, “monitoring, and evaluating an incubator” is part of the agenda.

Speakers of the workshop on Feb 29th included Ms. Sophia Muradyan, infoDev, from the World Bank Group, Natalia Pipia, team leader for Accelerate Caribbean, Kim Aikman, CEO from the Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and a panel of private sector representatives.

This initiative was developed in tandem with Belize’s newly National Entrepreneurship Strategy.

The Accelerate Caribbean training program focuses on strengthening the knowledge and skills of professionals in the entrepreneurial ecosystem.

The Business Incubator Management training will be delivered by infoDev certified trainers with experience working in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Who can participate?

Participants can be current or future incubator managers and staff members as well as representatives of incubator stakeholders, economic development agencies, and other organizations active in supporting the development and growth of enterprises.

What will I learn?

The day is designed to be practical, collaborative and interactive. During the three-day course you will learn how to:

  • Manage and grow your own incubator in a sustainable manner;
  • Monitor, evaluate, and benchmark your incubator’s performance against local and international competitors;
  • Adapt and apply the key principles of technology commercialization through incubation.

The three days course will take participants through modules 6, 7 and 10 of infoDev’s certified Business Incubation Management training program.
When and where will it be held?

The three day training event will take place on 1-2-3 March at the Belize Training and Employment Centre (BTEC), Belize City, Belize.

The training will be preceded by a half-day Entrepreneurial Ecosystem Development Workshop held in Belize City, on February 29th.

The workshop will focus on the challenges and opportunities present in Belize and will introduce discussions on how local and international stakeholders can collaboratively work to bolster the country’s business ecosystem.This forum will bring together incubator managers, entrepreneurs, academics, government officials, the media, donors, and investors.

Overview of WINC’s program

WINC is implementing a hybrid approach in supporting innovative and growth-oriented women entrepreneurs in the Caribbean, with the objective to (i) actively encourage growth-oriented women entrepreneurs to apply and participate in EPIC’s Caribbean Mobile Innovation Program (CMIP) and Caribbean Climate Innovation Center (CCIC); and (ii) provide business acceleration service offerings to innovative and growth-oriented entrepreneurs in other sectors.  Across all sectors, WINC will provide a peer-to-peer network to support growth-oriented women entrepreneurs and inspire future women business leaders in the region.
