BELTRAIDE PARTNERS WITH DFC TO ASSIST MSME’S TO ACCESS CREDIT

Image

April 9, 2014- On the 9th of April, the Development Finance Corporation (DFC), and the key investment promotion agency, Belize Trade and Investment Development Service (BELTRAIDE), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to benefit local Micro, Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (MSMEs) in the areas of credit facilitation and credit management.

DFC, the country’s premier development financing institution, currently offers and manages a series of productive sector credit programs geared toward the MSME sector in Belize. BELTRAIDE, through its Small Business Development Centre Belize (SBDCBelize), will be providing much needed long-term technical assistance through the advice and training to entrepreneurs and MSMEs, who intend to access credit through the DFC, to systematically improve their access to funding and develop their business acumen. It is greatly expected that in working with these clients, SBDCBelize will increase their potential to access credit from the DFC and also lower the lending risks for DFC, for this particular sector. This collaboration is expected to better connect our clients to much needed start-up or expansion capital and better prepare them to actively participate in a competitive environment. In addition to assisting new clients, the collaboration will also benefit existing clients of the DFC who may want to enhance their business management practices.

The signing of the MOU was held on Wednesday April 9th, 2014 at the Development Finance Corporation Headquarters Office, in Belmopan, between both parties. It is one of several initiatives being taken by both institutions to support small and medium size business development in the country.

Interested persons are asked to contact any of the DFC’s Offices countrywide or BELTRIADE Office.

SBDCBelize: Making Small Business Happen

A Successful Launch of Belize’s First Small Business Development Center

According to Channel 7 News Belize, “For months – we’ve been telling you all about Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises – or MSME’s as they are called.

Throughout the developing world – efforts are being made to grow these enterprises because they are seen as the building blocks of economic growth.

Today, a great leap forward was made the opening of the Small Business Development Center.

The center is located at the University of Belize Faculty of Business in West Landivar.

It’s open – but the formal opening could not be held there – because like the businesses it hopes to serve – the center is….shall we say, micro.

But it’s got a mighty bog job to do and the Deputy Executive Director of Beltraide who is spearheading the effort told us if you think your business qualifies, you should come in.”

Reporting on the consultation meeting with key stakeholders to assess the feasibility of adapting and implementing the SBDC model in Belize

ImageSince last year, the Belize Trade and Investment Development Service (BELTRAIDE) has done significant ground work in researching the success of the SBDC model in the US, Mexico and Central America and more importantly, its applicability to Belize. MSMEs represent a significant share of economic activity in Belize, a key instrument in poverty alleviation, and are considered a principal employer of the labour force. Given the importance of this sector, BELTRAIDE has given priority to its growth and development and has adopted a holistic approach that will facilitate targeted interventions to address the challenges faced. The work ahead requires partnerships with key stakeholders and BELTRAIDE has been reaching out to private sector, public sector and academia.

Below is extract from the report prepared by Caribbean Export Development Agency (CEDA) on the consultation meeting with key stakeholders, hosted by BELTRAIDE and DFC,  on March 2nd, 2012, at the Belize Bilmore Plaza, with key stakeholders to assess the feasibility of adapting and implementing the SBDC model in Belize.
