Belize’s Small Business Development Center Now a Reality!

  TheBelize Trade and Investment Development Service (BELTRAIDE), in partnership with the University of Belize, The Institute for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (ITVET), the Development Finance Corporation (DFC), The Belize City Council, with the kind assistance from The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), and the Organization of American States (OAS), is pleased to announce the launch of Belize’s first Small Business Development Centre. The launch will be held on Wednesday, October 31, 2012 at the Radisson Fort George Hotel, Cahal Pech Room, at 2:00p.m. Present at the Launch will be various local officials and stakeholders and representatives from UTSA and OAS, who are integral partners in this initiative.

BELTRAIDE engaged in extensive research to effectively evaluate the success of the SBDC model in United States of America, Mexico and Central America, and restructured the model to make it applicable to Belize. Over the past months, multiple trainings were conducted with several stakeholders. This initiative strengthened the readiness of Belize in establishing the center. SBDC Belize will offer the necessary business support to MSMEs, facilitating their competitiveness, export readiness; henceforth, assisting them to develop their competences. Successful Participation of Belize at Semana Regional Pyme Sur Sureste


The Government of Quintana Roo through its Ministry of Economic Development hosted and invited The Belize Trade and Investment Development Service (BELTRAIDE) to coordinate Belize’s participation at “Semana Regional Pyme Sur Sureste” for the entrepreneurial development of Micro, Small, and Medium Sized Enterprises (MSMEs).  The event was held from October 17-19, 2012, at the International Business and Convention Center, Chetumal, Quintana Roo. A total of 4 booths (with dimensions 2 meters by 2 meters) were endowed to Belize.

The Belize Pavilion was represented by BELTRAIDE, The Belize Tourism Board, Marie Sharp Fine Foods Ltd., Bel-Car Export and Import Company Ltd, and Cuello’s Distillery Ltd.  Hundreds of Visitors visited Belize’s pavilion throughout the three days. The representatives of the participating companies indicated that the event was gratifying and enabled them to generate leads and potential new customers for the exportation of their products. Other opportunities for the participants included business meetings with Soriana Inc. Chedraui, and Walmart. Marie Sharp Fine Foods Ltd., also, had the opportunity to meet with PROMEXCIO, the Institution responsible for promotion of investment in Mexico to discuss the challenges/problems/Issues that they have identified in the process of entering the Mexican Market.  As a final analysis, all the representatives of Belize indicated that they would definitely attend a similar event, and that most of their established objectives for attending were successfully met. BELTRAIDE thanks the participating companies, and the Belize Tourism Board for accepting the invitation to join BELTRAIDE in representing Belize at the Semana Regional Pyme Sur Sureste 2012.  BELTRAIDE Launches New Website

 October 18, 2012 – In an effort to continuously promote Belize and offer reliable and updated trade and investment information, the Belize Trade and Investment Development Service (BELTRAIDE), has re-designed its website, www.belizeinvest.org.bz. This new and improved website supports BELTRAIDE’s strong brand recognition, enhances awareness of Belize, and creates a portal to other useful websites.

The website features a clean design with organized descriptions covering the breadth of Belize’s priority sectors, the purpose of investing in Belize, the procedures to establish a business in Belize, resources, export development, and other updated and relevant information.  Additionally, the website incorporates modern tools such as social media, and other user user-friendly features. Medical Tourism Draft Proposal Ready, All On Board

The consultations on medical tourism have been going on for the last three months. And now the consultant has come up with what’s called a draft sector strategy – which means consultation is finished – and now the work comes to crafting the policy document. The various stakeholders held a final consultation followed by a press conference in Belize City today – and here’s what they said:..

“As we discussed in the meetings the vision of the government is to develop an industry that will create employment job opportunities, secondly, will afford us technology transfer to create the kind of knowledge jobs that Belize needs and also improve for Belizeans healthcare that right now is being exported. A lot of our Belizeans healthcare recipients actually travel to places like Merida, Guatemala and Miami for medical attention.”

“This has been 3 months that we will be in Belize to analyze the competitiveness environment that Belize has. Belize has a lot to offer to medical tourist. This is a renowned retirement destination – a natural tourism destination. This is a place where people really like to come; this is an English speaking country – a country that is not facing the same communication problems that other problems in Latin America that are willing to receive patients are facing.”

Caribbean ICT Roadshow


Caribbean ICT Roadshow

The Caribbean Information Communication Technology (ICT) Roadshow visited four locations in Belize; Belize City, Dangriga, Orange Walk and San Ignacio. The ICT Roadshow is an initiative of the Caribbean Telecommunications Union (CTU).

The purpose of the Roadshow is to raise awareness of the availability of current technology, the use of it in the personal and business context.

BELTRAIDE fully recognizes the power of technology in the workplace, especially for MSMEs. Promoting MSME’s products and/or services to reach virtually a worldwide audience, changing the way business is done, in more efficient, effective and not to mention less costly methods.
