Executive Program

The WIPO Academy Executive Education Program is working towards narrowing the intellectual property (IP) knowledge gap through short, intensive programs particularly designed for executives and managers of companies. Like other programs of the WIPO Academy, the Executive Program particularly encourages participation from developing and least-developed countries where such programs are not available.

Objectives

The Executive Program was initiated to offer business managers and senior executives of industry tools for using, valuating and managing IP for competitive advantages in their field of industry. This Program is committed to excellence in providing a better understanding of IP, as well as teaching and training how to use those rights in the daily business, to executives.

Background

In an increasingly knowledge-driven economy, a corporation’s ability to effectively harness and maximize the asset value of its IP has become a crucial factor in sustaining a competitive advantage. Intangible assets, including IP, account for over 70% of the market value of most companies in the S&P 500. Increasing significance of intangible assets is forcing business organizations to review them critically and to utilize them for building and sustaining competitive advantage.

The Executive Program is dedicated to developing and teaching of IP management worldwide. The program incorporates best practice methodologies for the strategic management of IP and brings together a team of renowned professors from Harvard Business School and Harvard Law School, industry leaders and management consultants from around the world to work with the international experts at WIPO. In keeping with our commitment to promote IP as a strategic tool for economic, social, cultural and technological development through a balanced and effective IP system, a refocused Executive Program is being deliberated to address the specific needs of the executives around the world, particularly those in developing countries, as they seek to create and implement more robust strategies to manage their intellectual property.

Designed for middle to senior level executives, this program teaches how IP can be strategically leveraged to create value and sustain competitive advantage over time in a rapidly changing environment. The program blends innovation with product design and IP management to offer a unique learning experience. Thought leaders from leading business schools and the corporate world will reveal unique insights and experiences using lectures, case studies, best practices and group discussions. Participants will have the opportunity to learn from each other, share experiences, reflect and apply the principles and best practices of innovation, product design and development, and IP management in their own business environment.

Target Audience

It targets executives and managers involved in R&D or with responsibility for the development and management of new products and processes including corporate technical staff, laboratory directors, managers responsible for the product or project engineering organizations, heads of research programs and managers with a heavy stake in the successful running of the company’s R&D effort. Thus entrepreneurs, board members, CEOs, presidents, vice presidents, general managers, executives in functional areas such as marketing, brand management, research and development, design, finance, managers of legal and IP department, heads of human resources, and operations in large and small firms and R&D organizations who seek to integrate intellectual property strategy into the corporate innovation and technology strategy will find the program useful.
